New Westminster Police responded to a report of a suspected grenade at the dog park in Ryall Park, Queensborough, on July 1 at about 10 a.m., only to discover the item was a novelty butane lighter shaped like an explosive device.

Officers blocked off the area and used a drone to search the park before locating the suspicious item. Once police determined there was no threat, the park was reopened.

"These lighters are as foolish as they are dangerous," said Sgt. Andrew Leaver. "These create unnecessary fear. Nothing about them is clever or funny."
