Police in New Westminster are investigating the discovery of what appeared to be an explosive device found on the 300 block of Ash Street on Thursday, July 9 at around 4 p.m.
New Westminster Police Department officers rushed to the location, secured the scene, and closed off the street to traffic. Some residents in a nearby multi-family building were asked to leave out of an abundance of caution.
"We treat every threat as real until we can determine otherwise," said NWPD Sergeant Andrew Leaver. "While this does cause a disruption, it's paramount that we take steps to keep people safe."
Officers worked the scene for approximately three hours, including deploying a police drone. In partnership with the BC RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit, they transported the object to a secure location for detailed analysis.
"The appearance of the device caused this person enough concern to call 911," Leaver said. "Explosive technicians are conducting a detailed analysis of the device to learn more."
Police have not yet confirmed whether the object is actually an explosive device. Anyone with information is asked to call New Westminster Police at 604-525-5411.
