The Vancouver Police Department has introduced a new electric all-terrain vehicle to its frontline policing operations, marking what it says is the first known use of a Can-Am Outlander Electric ATV by a North American police agency.
The new ATVs will support officers with public safety, crime prevention, community engagement and rapid response in parks, trails, waterfront areas, and other locations where traditional police vehicles have limited access.
"The new electric ATVs will provide officers with an efficient and environmentally responsible option for patrols," VPD said. Their near-silent operation is particularly useful for enforcement and public safety initiatives in areas where minimizing noise disruption is important.
The deployment reflects the VPD's ongoing effort to evaluate emerging technologies that enhance operational effectiveness while reducing environmental impact. Like a gas-powered model, the electric ATVs carry the same capabilities but require less maintenance.
This addition comes after the VPD's recent deployment of Skydio X10 drones as part of the Drone as First Responder Program—making it the first police agency in Canada to use that technology.
