Science World's transformation into a giant soccer ball is finished. The last of 131 hexagon-shaped panels was installed on the geodesic dome Wednesday, just eight days before the FIFA World Cup kicks off across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico.

The installation wraps an accurate replica of the adidas Trionda — the tournament's official match ball — around one of Vancouver's most recognizable landmarks. Specialized rope access technicians from Ontario-based The Look Company began the work in early May, leaving air space between the temporary banner panels and the dome's reflective steel surface.

"The Beautiful Dome," as the project is officially named, is already drawing international media attention and will likely become one of the most photographed landmarks in the city during the tournament. The 40-metre-diameter installation serves as a visual beacon for the steady stream of crowds heading to BC Place Stadium on Vancouver's seven match days — the route runs from SkyTrain's Main Street-Science World Station along Quebec Street and Pacific Boulevard.

The transformation ranks among the largest FIFA World Cup landmark makeovers across the 16 host cities in North America. Jessie Adcock, the Host Committee Lead and Chief Delivery Officer for the FIFA World Cup Vancouver Host Committee, told Daily Hive Urbanized the installation showcases the city's technical capabilities and readiness for hosting major international events.

It's the kind of detail that turns a tournament into theatre.
