Vancouver's last all-sports radio station went dark on Tuesday, July 7. Sportsnet 650 and News1130, both owned by Rogers Media, have been taken off the air after the company determined declining audiences and revenue made them unsustainable.
The closures are part of a wider Rogers restructuring affecting six stations in four Canadian markets. News1130, which had been a prominent news voice in Vancouver, and Sportsnet 650, which held the Canucks broadcast rights, ceased operations immediately.
"After a thorough review of our radio stations across the country, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to close Sportsnet 650 and News 1130 in Vancouver," a Rogers Sports & Media spokesperson said. "We are grateful to our listeners and to our team for their contributions to the local community."
Canucks radio broadcasts will shift to another Rogers Sports & Media owned station in the market, though details have not yet been released. Sportsnet 650 had launched in April 2017 as a competitor to TSN 1040, which had held the Canucks rights before Bell's 2021 shutdown of that station.
Rogers will continue operating 44 radio stations across Canada following the closures.
