The Vancouver Aquatic Centre at 1050 Beach Ave. will close its doors for the last time on June 28, ending more than 50 years of operation at the current location.
The facility has reached the end of its functional life, prompting the city and park board to move forward with a planned renewal. Construction of the new facility is expected to begin in late 2026, with demolition anticipated to start in fall 2026.
The new $175 million aquatic centre will include a 25-metre lap pool for swimming and competitive events, a dedicated diving tank with multiple board heights, a leisure pool with wellness amenities like a hot pool and sauna, an expanded fitness room, and a multi-purpose room for community programs. Modern and accessible washrooms and change rooms are also part of the design.
The project is fully funded with an approved budget, though the redevelopment has been contentious. Last year, dozens of public speakers expressed strong opposition to the plan to build a 25-metre lap pool as the main tank instead of the originally envisioned 50-metre pool capable of hosting more recreational swimmers and elite competitions. The Protecting Our Vancouver Aquatic Centre Society is challenging the project in B.C. Supreme Court on June 19.
Park board staff are currently reviewing capacity across the city's aquatic system to maintain continuity of programs and services for existing users and swim groups during the transition.
