Fireworks are banned in Surrey without a permit from Fire Services, and the maximum fine for illegal use or possession is $50,000. Bylaw enforcement officers are deployed in high-activity areas tonight and next week, working with police.

Officers will respond to reports, gather evidence, issue tickets and bring in police as needed, the city said on surrey.ca.

Residents with complaints should call City of Surrey Bylaws at 604-591-4370. Call 911 only for an emergency. Surrey RCMP have made the same request ahead of both events.

Diwali falls on Nov. 8 this year, and fireworks are expected during the celebrations despite the warnings, the city said. A Surrey bylaws officer, Grewal, warned in a video posted to the city's Facebook page that fireworks can start fires, cause serious injuries and distress people and pets.
