A 72-year-old man visiting from the United States is in stable but critical condition after being struck by a cyclist at a downtown Vancouver crosswalk Monday evening.

The couple was crossing West Cordova at Richards Street in Gastown around 5:30 p.m. when a cyclist heading east on Cordova struck both of them. They reportedly had the right of way. The man lost consciousness and was transported to Vancouver General Hospital for emergency surgery. His wife suffered minor injuries and was also hospitalized.

The Vancouver Police Department is investigating. The cyclist remained at the scene and was not injured. The investigation is ongoing.
