Vancouver's Mobi bike share will operate through 2031 after city renews five-year contract
The system has recorded more than 8.8 million rides since its 2016 launch and recently expanded to the UBC campus as shared e-scooters now compete for riders.

Vancouver's public bike share system will continue operating at least through the end of 2031 after the City of Vancouver renewed its contract with Vancouver Bike Share, the operator of Mobi by Rogers, for a second five-year extension.
Mobi marked its 10th anniversary this summer after launching on July 20, 2016, initially serving a small area of Vancouver. The fleet and geographic coverage steadily expanded beyond the Downtown Peninsula and Central Broadway corridor. In 2023, Mobi extended beyond the City of Vancouver's jurisdiction for the first and only time, bringing service to the University of British Columbia campus.
The original agreement ran from February 2016 through Dec. 31, 2021. The city approved its first five-year extension covering Jan. 1, 2022 through Dec. 31, 2026. The latest extension takes effect at the beginning of 2027 and keeps the agreement in place through Dec. 31, 2031. The original contract gave the City the option of approving three separate five-year extensions; two have now been used, leaving the possibility of one final extension potentially keeping the agreement in place through 2036.
Mobi has recorded more than 8.8 million rides since launch, with one million unique users collectively travelling more than 25.5 million kilometres. "It is a privilege to provide bike share services to residents and visitors of the City of Vancouver and UBC," Mobi CEO Mia Kohout said. "With the extension of our supply agreement, we remain committed to providing a sustainable, affordable, active and fun transportation option for years to come."
The city did not identify specific operational or performance changes in the latest extension, but said each renewal can be amended to reflect lessons learned and improve procedures. After e-bikes were added to the fleet in 2022, the first contract extension introduced specific e-bike performance data requirements. The renewal comes as Lime's shared e-scooters, which launched in Vancouver in Summer 2024, have expanded significantly since Spring 2025, though the municipal government and company's joint decision to extend the Mobi contract suggests the bike share service has maintained a strong role in Vancouver's active transportation network.
