WestJet announced cuts to five flight routes from Vancouver this winter, citing insufficient demand rather than labour issues, as the airline adjusts its network across western Canada.
The reductions begin in October and December and affect routes to popular U.S. destinations and Hawaii. WestJet spokesperson Julia Kaiser said the airline continually evaluates its network to ensure aircraft are deployed where demand is strongest.
"Last winter, five routes did not generate sufficient demand to be sustainable through the winter months," Kaiser said. "Decisions to adjust our network are never made lightly, and we understand this may be disappointing news for our guests and the communities we serve."
The affected routes and their status are: - Atlanta: reduced to twice-weekly service from October 15, 2026, through April 24, 2027 - Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood: once-weekly seasonal service starting October 31 - Los Angeles: cut from 10 times weekly to service beginning December 7, 2026, though Delta will assume the route starting November 21 - Lihue, Hawaii: four-times weekly seasonal service cancelled as of December 7, 2026 - Orlando: once-weekly flights that were expected to resume October 26 following extended cancellation since April 27, 2026
WestJet said it remains committed to providing access to these destinations through its global hub at Calgary, as well as through codeshare and interline partners. Affected travellers will be contacted either directly or through a travel agent.
Many airlines worldwide have reduced routes or frequency amid fuel shortages caused by the ongoing Iran war. Kaiser did not directly comment on whether the cuts were related to fuel costs or changing demand for U.S. travel.
