Metro Vancouver's cleantech sector added a major facility Monday: Moment Energy, a Coquitlam-based company, opened Megafactory 1 in Surrey — the world's largest EV battery repurposing facility.
The factory turns retired electric vehicle batteries into energy storage systems for data centres, hospitals, microgrids, factories, and other clients. The project moved from announcement to operation in just six weeks, according to co-founder and CEO Edward Chiang.
Moment Energy, founded in 2019 by four SFU engineering graduates in a Surrey garage, has secured supply deals with Nissan North America and Mercedes-Benz Energy. The facility is expected to produce 1 GWh of battery energy storage systems by 2030 and will create over 100 direct jobs plus more than 1,000 indirect jobs across the province. PacifiCan provided a $4.9 million investment to support the expansion.
