Calgary's dining scene is losing four familiar spots this fall, each for different reasons — a long-running downtown fixture winding down, a neighbourhood bar paused by landlord conflict, a Japanese sister concept reaching its end of life, and a decade-long rum haunt signing off with a farewell party.
Yellow Door Bistro, the contemporary spot at Hotel Arts on 12th Avenue SW, is closing after 13 years. The restaurant offered no reason for the closure but thanked its community in an Instagram post: "Thank you to everyone who has visited, celebrated and dined with us over the years. We're incredibly grateful to have been part of so many occasions, big and small."
Weaselhead Bar & Grill at 4604 37th Street SW in the southwest has been forced to pause operations temporarily due to what it called "irreconcilable differences" with its property manager. The team said it would be "pausing operations" rather than closing permanently, leaving a path for potential reopening.
On the Red Mile, Koko Japanese Eatery + Convenience at 620A 17th Avenue SW is closing Sept. 30. The spot was a sister brand to YYC's Ryuko restaurants. "After an incredible journey, it's time for us to say goodbye to Koko," the restaurant said on Instagram.
Ricardo's Hideaway, the rum-focused cocktail bar just off 17th Avenue, is closing at year-end after 10 years. Rather than a quiet exit, the venue is throwing a summer-long farewell party featuring surprise rum specials, late-night endless jerk crab and wings, and $10 rum cocktails to celebrate a decade of service. The address is 1530 5th Street SW.
