The Airdrie Public Library has launched a new piece of merchandise called "Page Against the Machine" — a shirt that channels the spirit of activism while raising funds for the library's operations.
The design puts a literary twist on the name of the rock band Rage Against the Machine, which has come to symbolize a call to action against oppressive systems. The library said it created the shirt to add humour to serious concerns about funding and to encourage conversation about the challenges libraries face in Alberta.
"When life gives libraries lemons, we feed them into the pun machine and create a cool new shirt," the library said in its announcement. The merch embodies the library's swag shop brand — "sassy & subversive" — combining cheeky defiance with genuine fundraising purpose.
This is the latest addition to the library's merchandise line, which started with tumblers bearing "witty library saying here," evolved into "Talk Nerdy to Me" hoodies, then moved into slightly more pointed territory with "sorry, it's not a hospital." The progression reflects the library's willingness to use humour as a tool for both engagement and advocacy.
Jamie Moorhouse, the library's Donor Engagement Champion, said the merch shop is an important part of fundraising efforts. "Our shop started with tumblers, which evolved into the sassy hoodies, which then moved into the slightly subversive with 'sorry, it's not a hospital,' and now lands firmly in both sassy and subversive territory," Moorhouse said.
The shirt is available for purchase in person and through the library's online store. Proceeds support the library as it navigates ongoing funding pressures affecting public libraries across Alberta.
