An ambulance transporting a patient collided with a tractor on Tuesday afternoon northeast of Calgary, leaving the patient in critical condition and two paramedics seriously injured.

The crash occurred around 1 p.m. at a rural intersection on Highway 9 and Range Road 254, just east of Beiseker. RCMP said the ambulance had its lights and sirens activated when it struck the tractor.

The patient was airlifted by STARS in critical condition. The ambulance driver and the paramedic caring for the patient were taken to hospital by ground ambulance with serious but stable injuries.

Highway 9 remains closed in the area while officials investigate.

The incident highlights the dangers paramedics face responding to emergency calls in rural areas, where intersection visibility and traffic patterns differ sharply from city routes.
