A starter gun — a device used to signal the beginning of track and field races and other athletic competitions — was found in the possession of a student at Bow Valley High School in Airdrie on October 14.
Principal Shane Dempster said the item was not displayed, used or referenced in a threatening manner, and there was no indication of intent to cause harm. "As soon as school administration became aware of the situation, the device was secured and removed from the student," Dempster said. RCMP was notified and is supporting the school's review of the incident.
Starter guns can resemble actual firearms, which is why the school takes such discoveries seriously. "Any item that could be mistaken for a weapon or could cause concern is taken very seriously," Dempster said. The device was not used in any way at the school.
The investigation is underway and will be addressed in accordance with Rocky View Schools procedures in consultation with RCMP. Dempster urged parents to speak with their children about appropriate items for school and the importance of reporting anything that causes concern. "Please remind your child that support is available at school if they have questions or concerns related to this incident," he added.
What disciplinary action, if any, will the student face under Rocky View Schools procedures?
