Dalvir Sidhu, 33, has been released on bail in connection with the 2020 death of Chestermere resident Sahil Grewal, 18, who died three days after ingesting fentanyl-laced cough syrup.
Sidhu was arrested in July 2025 and charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder. On Friday, Justice Eleanor Funk of the Court of King's Bench granted bail with conditions, rejecting the Crown's request for 24-hour house arrest.
The conditions are strict: Sidhu must reside in a Chestermere home with his father, who is acting as surety. He's under a curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., must wear a monitoring device, maintain only one cell phone with a single number provided to his bail officer, and is prohibited from possessing firearms or weapons. He cannot contact the two other accused in the case — Mohit Sandhu, 24, and Harmanjot Chumber, 24, both also charged with first-degree murder.
Justice Funk told Sidhu the release represented "his one chance, as those facing first-degree murder charges often don't get second chances." She stated the Chestermere residence was chosen for "easier police monitoring" and found the father "both sincere and capable of carrying out his duties as surety."
Sidhu's criminal record is relatively short, with one youth violence conviction and one drug conviction from 2020. A $10,000 cash deposit was required. A publication ban has been imposed on all evidence and submissions to protect the integrity of the jury trial, scheduled for fall 2027. Police allege the fentanyl-laced cough syrup was originally intended for Jaskaran Sidhu, 25, who was listed as an attempted murder victim.
