A Calgary-area man accused of poisoning an 18-year-old with fentanyl-laced cough syrup has been ordered to stand trial.

Mohit Sandhu, of Conrich, is charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with an April 3, 2020, incident in Chestermere. Justice Brandy Shaw ordered him to face a Calgary Court of King's Bench jury after a preliminary inquiry.

Sandhu is accused of causing the death of Sahil Grewal, who died three days after consuming poisoned cough syrup. He also faces an attempted murder charge related to Jaskarat Singh Sidhu on the same date.

The preliminary inquiry ran for eight days beginning in January. Crown prosecutors called seven witnesses, and the defence unusually presented two witnesses of its own — a rare move in preliminary hearings, which determine whether sufficient evidence exists for trial.

Justice Shaw imposed a publication ban on the evidence presented during the hearing.

Sidhu, the alleged attempted murder victim, is currently serving a life sentence for two counts of second-degree murder in fatal shootings outside a northeast Calgary bar on April 3, 2019 — exactly one year before Grewal was poisoned. He and Prabhjyot Bhatti were convicted in December 2024 of first-degree murder in those killings.

Sandhu remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Court of King's Bench on July 10.
