Elma Street in Okotoks turned into an outdoor gallery on Friday when the Okotoks Art Council hosted its Elma Street Arts Walk, drawing over 30 artists and crowds of visitors exploring a picturesque street lined with stalls and live performance.
The open-air market format let visitors speak directly with painters, photographers, potters and jewelers, watching some craft their work in real time. Buskers wandered between stalls, entertaining the crowd as people browsed. The event brought together artists of every discipline—a mix of media and skill levels, all working on Elma Street, one of the town's most charming corners.
The Okotoks Art Council, a not-for-profit since 1981, hosts the Elma Street Arts Walk twice a year. The organization has anchored local arts programming for over four decades, starting when the Town of Okotoks purchased a decommissioned CPR train station in 1979 specifically to build an arts and culture centre.
For visitors, the walk offered a chance to support local makers and see the creative work happening just south of Calgary. For artists, it provided direct contact with buyers and admirers—the kind of face-to-face sales and feedback that online markets can't replicate.
