The Calgary Surge defeated the Vancouver Bandits 95-80 on Thursday, July 9 at Scotiabank Saddledome in the Surge2Stampede celebration game.
The 23-year-old Ranchlands native Caelum Swanton-Rodger, the Surge's 7-foot centre rookie, was on the floor for 9:36 and scored on a second-quarter slam-dunk. "Yeah … like growing up and going to Flames games and going to Hitmen games here and getting to see this building rock and now getting to experience it myself has been phenomenal," Swanton-Rodger said after the game. "Huge honour — massive, massive honour."
Swanton-Rodger has been earning more minutes since coach Dave DeAveiro took over the reins last month. He's been showing his American teammates and Toronto-based players the ropes at the Calgary Stampede throughout the week. "We went to the rodeo, we rode the rides, we got the fried Oreos — all the good stuff," he said. The team is also planning an outing to the mechanical bull at Ranchman's.
The Surge (3-13) are looking to build momentum after winning their last outing 92-84 in B.C. on Sunday against the same Bandits. Their next matchup is Sunday at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg against the Sea Bears (10-5) at 1:30 p.m., which will air on CBC, CBC Gem, YouTube, and CEBL+.
