CTrain struck pedestrian Thursday morning, leaving riders scrambling for transit updates

A pedestrian was struck by a CTrain at 7 Avenue between 7 Street and 8 Street SW around 6:15 a.m. on Thursday, September 24, leaving one person injured with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The person was taken to hospital. Red Line and Blue Line service shut down along 7 Avenue SW for more than an hour, with service restored around 8 a.m. Investigation into the cause of the strike is ongoing.

The disruption occurred during morning rush hour, and the delay exposed communication gaps between Calgary Transit and commuters. Riders struggled to find accurate information about service changes and shuttle buses through station announcements, digital displays, or transit updates.

Tyler Visser, a daily commuter, arrived approximately 40 minutes late to class after learning about the downtown closure from a train operator while already en route. "It's unreliable. It makes me want to get my own personal vehicle instead of taking public transit," Visser said. He noted he did not receive an alert but was able to find delays on the Transit app by checking service updates manually.

Terri Bonderoff, Calgary Transit's leader of operations, explained that the incident occurred at 6:12 a.m., and because of noise bylaws, the transit authority cannot make announcements before 7 a.m. Calgary Transit recommends using a third-party app called Transit, which allows users to pin specific routes and receive push alerts when disruptions occur.

At approximately 10 a.m., electronic displays at Bridgeland Station were not showing train arrival times despite schedule information being available through the Transit app. One unnamed rider said, "They have a hard time with the times. It's mostly out of service." Another added: "I come here randomly. I'll wait less over time than if I check the times, because they're always off." Andrew Campbell, another daily rider, said when downtown and delayed, depending on distance, he will get off and walk rather than rely on posted information.
