Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Calgary warning that conditions are favourable for funnel clouds Sunday afternoon, continuing into the evening, with the possibility of weak landspout tornadoes.
Temperatures are expected to dip to 5 C as thunderstorms and heavy rain sweep through the city. Funnel clouds form from weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms — typically not dangerous at ground level, but with a chance of intensifying into weak landspout tornadoes.
"Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage, but can still be dangerous," the Environment Canada notice reads. "They can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances."
The warning comes as Calgary's Lilac Festival kicks off on 4th Street S.W. downtown. The massive street fair will have several major corridors fully closed to vehicles starting early Sunday, with heavy temporary parking and traffic changes expected throughout the day.
City crews are reminding drivers and festival-goers to plan ahead. The Calgary Parking Authority recommends using off-street parking and allowing extra walking time. Those attending should monitor weather updates as the afternoon progresses.
