Calgary faces significant rainfall this weekend, with Environment and Climate Change Canada warning of 50 to 100 millimetres of rain Sunday into Monday evening, ending by Tuesday morning.
The agency cautioned that water will likely pool on roads in low-lying areas, and fast-moving currents can sweep vehicles away and damage infrastructure. "Don't drive through flooded roadways. Watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts," the alert states.
Mayor Jeromy Farkas said river levels are currently within normal ranges but are expected to increase "modestly" early in the week. "We do not anticipate overbank flooding in communities," he said, noting the scale of the event is expected to be similar to one in early June. The city may see wet low-lying areas near the river, some pathway closures at underpasses, and possibly a boating advisory. Crews are on standby if needed, though additional emergency responses are not expected.
Forecasts call for thunderstorms both Sunday and Monday, with highs between 15 and 17 degrees Celsius.
