Calgary faces significant rainfall this weekend, with Environment Canada forecasting between 50 and 100 millimetres from Sunday morning through Monday night.
Periods of rain are expected to start late Sunday morning or early afternoon, intensifying through the evening and overnight. Weak bands of thunderstorms may travel across the city Sunday evening. The rain will diminish Monday night and end by Tuesday morning.
City officials say river levels are currently within normal ranges but will likely rise modestly with the incoming water. Mayor Jeromy Farkas said the event is expected to be similar in scale to early June rainfall, potentially resulting in wet low-lying areas near the river, some pathway closures at underpasses, and possibly a boating advisory. No advisories or closures are in effect yet, but the city is monitoring conditions and crews are prepared to respond if conditions worsen.
Environment Canada warns that water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas. Fast-moving and rapidly rising water can sweep vehicles away and damage infrastructure — drivers should avoid flooded roadways. Residents should watch for washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts and continue monitoring alerts from Environment Canada.
