Three charged in South Asian extortion case that escalated to northeast shooting

Calgary Police have charged three people in an extortion case that escalated into a drive-by shooting outside a northeast residence. The charges come as part of an ongoing investigation into a series of incidents targeting the city's South Asian community since April 2025.

On March 25, a Calgary woman began receiving WhatsApp messages demanding money that included her full name, address, business details, and knowledge of family members, along with explicit threats of violence. Roughly 12 hours later, suspects fired a gun at her residence in Skyview Ranch Northeast around 4:30 a.m., then fled in a stolen vehicle.

Kanureet Kaur, 23, of Chestermere was arrested September 8 and charged with one count of extortion for providing personal information about the victim to the perpetrators. Kaur is scheduled to appear in court October 6 and has been released from custody. A 17-year-old male, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was arrested July 29 and charged with one count of extortion for facilitating communication between the victim and perpetrators and making threats. The youth has also been released.

Tanveer Singh, 21, of Calgary remains at large on a warrant for possession of stolen property over $5,000. Singh is accused of possessing the stolen vehicle used during the shooting. His description: 5'8" tall, approximately 130 pounds, black hair, brown eyes.

Since the extortion series began in April 2025, Calgary Police report 51 total extortion-related incidents with 19 people charged and 59 offences laid. Police say the frequency of extortion reports has declined since June, with no violent events reported since then. The Calgary Police Service and ALERT continue Operation Orion on the investigative side and Operation Outage, which increases police presence in South Asian communities to build trust.
