Three men are in serious condition after gunfire erupted in two separate Calgary incidents early Saturday morning. Police were called to a Beltline apartment building at 14th Avenue S.W. shortly before 11 p.m. Friday, where two male victims were found with gunshot wounds. Both were taken to Foothills Medical Centre in serious condition but have since been upgraded to non-life-threatening status. Then, around 3 a.m. Saturday, a third man was shot in the 400 block of 5th Avenue S.E. He remains stable in hospital.

Staff Sgt. John Guigon said investigators believe both incidents bear "the hallmarks" of targeted shootings — no robberies, no theft from victims. "There (was) no robbery … no theft from (the victims), nothing like that," Guigon said. "Typically, a random shooting has something to do with another offence occurring."

Police don't currently believe the two shootings, which occurred about five hours apart, are connected. No arrests have been made. The incidents bring the total number of reported shootings in Calgary to at least four in the past four days, including a Forest Lawn shooting early Friday and a Connaught Park shooting Wednesday. Guigon described the recent string as unusual. "The amount of these (shootings) occurring in this short span is not typical at all," he said.
