The University of Calgary has climbed 15 places in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking for 2027, landing at 185th globally with a score of 59.9, up from 200th last year.

The jump reflects strength across multiple areas. The university scored 84.7 on research quality, 88.7 on industry engagement, and 82 on international outlook. Its teaching score of 39.9 and research environment score of 44.7 show room to improve, but the overall trajectory is upward.

In Canada, Calgary now ranks 8th, ahead of the University of Alberta (118th globally, 5th in Canada). The ranking assesses over 2,000 research-intensive universities globally using 17 performance indicators across five pillars: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

The climb reflects earlier progress — Calgary landed in the top 300 of 8,000 universities globally earlier in 2026. University of Toronto remains Canada's highest-ranked institution at 22nd globally, followed by McGill (43rd) and the University of British Columbia (44th). Oxford holds the global top spot with a score of 97.9.
