The Valleyview Shopping Centre in Edmonton's Parkview neighbourhood has a grocery store again. Valleyview IGA, which operated as Andy's IGA for nearly six decades before closing, has reopened along 142 Street at 91 Avenue.
Store manager Stuart Trenchard, who started as a bag boy at a Morinville IGA at age 14 and worked his way up through Sobeys properties across Edmonton, said the reopening has drawn eager customers.
"Customers have been knocking on the doors for two months since we've been doing construction—they're so excited to see us come back," Trenchard said. "They're so excited to see the IGA brand come back."
John Pracejus, director of the University of Alberta school of retailing, said the IGA name carries particular weight with shoppers. "I think going back to the IGA banner is going to be very helpful to them. People that remember that store being there for decades and decades are probably going to give it another shot and maybe return."
Trenchard notes the nostalgia tied to the IGA brand, especially in smaller communities. "I grew up at IGA, I started when I was 14 years old so this brings back a lot of memories, feelings, emotions for me. I get what they mean when they want to come back to an IGA."
Andrew Taschuk, who operated Andy's IGA for 59 years before retiring in 2024, was among those waiting Thursday morning for the store to reopen. He emphasized the role a neighbourhood grocer plays in building community.
"Operating the store for 59 years meant a lot to us and our family. The community around this IGA store is the best community in Edmonton. They really appreciate the independent grocer. I'm sure they'll be supporting it wonderfully in the next 59 years."
The new IGA replaces L'OCA Quality Market, an artisan grocer that opened in January 2025 and closed in March after 14 months. Some former L'OCA staff have been brought on at the new IGA, which has hired about 45-50 people total, according to city councillor Thu Parmar. The store is open 9 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.
