The Leduc Curling Club's junior curling program is open to kids aged 7 to 18, who are grouped with peers of similar age and curling experience. The program meets once a week, on Wednesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
The season began Oct. 7, but registration stays open for the year. Families can register, or find more about the club's programs, at www.leduc.curling.io under the Leagues tab.
Junior Curling Coordinator Roger Simpson said the program's affordability is a major draw, with a low fundraising commitment once yearly dues are paid. The club recommends new curlers commit to three practice sessions before deciding. If a family goes ahead, the curler pays a pro-rated fee covering those three sessions plus the rest of the season, which ends March 24.
Four junior coaches, all former junior curlers, work with adult coaching assistants, giving a near 4-to-1 participant-to-coach ratio. Simpson said curling suits a young start because it can be played for life. "It's a sport you can do for the rest of your life," he said. Once the season reaches January, there are occasional inter-community events where curlers compete alongside their peers.
