Cessna 172 makes emergency landing on Highway 21 near Sherwood Park
A small plane touched down safely on the highway between Highway 16 and Baseline Road early Wednesday morning with two men aboard and no injuries.

A Cessna 172 made an emergency landing on Highway 21 between Highway 16 and Baseline Road, near Sherwood Park, at roughly 1:25 a.m. on Wednesday morning with a pilot and passenger aboard. Both men escaped injury, and the plane sustained no visible damage.
Southbound lanes on Highway 21 were blocked for a significant period while Strathcona County RCMP assisted with traffic management. The aircraft was later moved off the highway to a nearby range road.
"Thankfully, they were able to land the plane safely, and there looks to be no damage to the plane, but why they had to do an emergency landing is currently under investigation," Const. Sandra Geiger of Alberta RCMP said in a phone call Wednesday morning. The reason for the emergency landing has not been determined. At the time of reporting, authorities had not established where the plane was coming from or where it was scheduled to land.
The Transportation Safety Board will conduct a full investigation into the cause. The Cessna 172 is registered to the Namao Flying Club.
