Sahibjot Singh, who came to Canada in September 2023 on a student permit to attend Portage College in Lac La Biche, was found inadmissible to Canada in July and removed this summer. Court documents place Singh alongside other suspects allegedly led by mid-level ringleader Arshdeep Singh in a web of organized criminal activity spanning B.C., Alberta and Ontario.
Singh admitted to possessing and discharging unauthorized weapons. His phone was seized after his number was identified in a cellphone recovered from Arshdeep Singh, who had been under investigation for months. A social media search revealed Singh posted numerous videos and images of himself in possession of firearms.
The Canada Border Services Agency describes the group as "mainly South Asians from India targeting South Asian business owners for extortion money where threats of arson and shootings" invoke the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, though Singh denied involvement. "Roles within the organization range from planning and directing the extortions, to making the calls and text messages, to providing the crime guns and vehicles to carry out the act to being the shooter or arsonist on scene," according to a CBSA report.
As of September, the CBSA had issued 188 removal orders against suspected extortionists. The agency has removed 111 foreign nationals so far this week. Three other individuals named alongside Singh in the CBSA release—Palwinder Singh, Jasmer Singh and Amitoz Bajwa—were removed from Canada by the agency.
