A 22-year-old man with alleged ties to an international criminal network targeting South Asian business owners has been arrested in Edmonton and transferred to Ontario on Canada-wide warrants for conspiracy to commit murder and extortion.
Safaldeep Singh was initially arrested following a May 4 traffic stop that yielded drugs and a loaded firearm. After his release on bail, Edmonton police searched his home on May 28 and June 23, seizing evidence linked to vehicle re-vinning operations connected to extortion crimes.
On June 23, Singh was charged in Edmonton with trafficking in property obtained by crime, possession of stolen property, and unauthorized possession of a firearm. Police allege he has ties to the "For Brothers" gang, which is linked to shootings and extortions of South Asian business owners across Canada, notably in the Greater Toronto Area, and the United States.
Peel Regional Police are continuing their investigation. The allegations against Singh have not been tested in court.
Police in both Alberta and Ontario are working closely together on this and similar cases. The South Asian business community has faced years of extortion targeting, with victims typically receiving threats via WhatsApp, social media, or international phone calls. Some incidents have involved arson and shootings. In May, Peel police arrested more than a dozen suspects linked to violent extortion, several of them members of the "For Brothers" gang.
