Construction season underway — city apologizes upfront

Edmonton's major bridge and infrastructure projects are ramping up this season, with officials bracing residents for disruptions.

Edmonton officials have kicked off the city's construction season with an unusually direct acknowledgment: traffic and inconvenience are coming.

The Wellington Bridge Replacement project, which began in fall 2025, is in full swing with bridge girders currently being installed. The project is expected to wrap by the end of 2026, with landscaping to follow in 2027. The Wellington Bridge carries significant east-west traffic and its replacement is one of several major infrastructure initiatives underway across the city.

Mayor Andrew Knack and city council have been explicit about the trade-off: short-term pain for long-term infrastructure resilience. Rather than soft-pedalling the disruptions, the city has leaned into transparency about what residents and commuters should expect.

Edmonton's bridge and road network faces aging challenges across multiple corridors. The Wellington project is part of a broader capital plan to address structural deficits and improve connectivity. Other projects are expected to unfold throughout the season.

Residents are advised to plan alternate routes and check the city's construction tracker for real-time project updates.
