An Edmonton police officer fatally shot a man inside a Cavanagh neighbourhood home during a warrant execution on June 27, according to the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), the province's police watchdog.
Police were responding to multiple reports of vehicle crashes involving a man driving a black Jeep in south Edmonton, including a collision with an Edmonton Fire Rescue Services truck shortly before midnight. Witnesses told police the man had a weapon.
Officers later located the damaged vehicle in the open garage of a home in Cavanagh and entered with a warrant. According to ASIRT, they were "immediately met by a man near the doorway who was advancing quickly towards them and appeared to be carrying weapons." The officer then fired their service weapon, killing the man.
ASIRT is mandated to investigate incidents involving serious injury or death during police operations. The watchdog's findings will determine whether the use of force was justified.
