A man died Friday night after a confrontation with Edmonton police during a bizarre sequence of hit-and-run collisions and assaults in southwest Edmonton.
The 59-year-old man was shot after attempting to assault emergency personnel with a blunt object when police arrived around midnight, according to a police statement Saturday. Earlier that evening, a vehicle matching the suspect's description was involved in at least two other hit-and-run incidents in the southwest, with the driver allegedly assaulting complainants with a blunt object. One victim sustained minor injuries.
Officers located a residence on Christie Vista S.W. where a vehicle matching the description was parked in an open garage. The vehicle showed recent collision damage. When officers attempted contact, a confrontation occurred between the male suspect armed with edged weapons and one officer, who discharged a firearm.
No officers or other emergency personnel were injured. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been directed to investigate the officer-involved shooting, as is standard protocol for such incidents.
