A man died Friday night, June 26, after a confrontation with Edmonton police in southwest Edmonton, prompting an investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team.
Around 11:58 p.m., police responded to a call from Edmonton Fire Rescue Services after a vehicle collided with a firetruck. The driver attempted to assault emergency personnel with a blunt object before fleeing, police said.
Two additional hit-and-run reports followed in the southwest end. In both incidents, the driver allegedly assaulted complainants with a blunt object. One person sustained minor injuries. Police believed the same vehicle was involved in all three collisions.
Officers located a residence on Christie Vista S.W. where a vehicle matching the description sat in an open garage, showing recent collision damage. During an attempt to make contact with a suspect at the home, a confrontation occurred. An officer discharged a firearm after the man was armed with edged weapons, police said.
Officers attempted life-saving measures, but the 59-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. No officers or emergency personnel were injured.
ASIRT has begun its investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
