Edmonton teacher Jimmy Buena was arrested at Edmonton International Airport on April 15 on charges related to child sexual abuse material, authorities said Monday.
Buena previously worked at St. Oscar Romero Catholic High School in west Edmonton before the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) issued a warrant for his arrest in June 2025. An ALERT spokesperson said at the time it was believed Buena had left for the Philippines.
Buena faces charges for making, accessing, possessing, and transmitting child pornography. Investigators alleged he distributed child sexual abuse materials using Facebook.
The Edmonton Catholic School Division sent a letter to parents and families at St. Oscar Romero saying there was no information to suggest any of Buena's students were involved.
Buena has been released from custody and is not facing charges for fleeing the country. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 18.
