A four-year-old girl died Sunday after being hit by a Jeep in a north Edmonton parking lot near 66 Street and 170 Avenue.

About 5:15 p.m., the girl broke free from her mother while they were walking through the lot. She ran onto 66 Street, where an SUV struck her. Bystanders attempted to resuscitate her before EMS arrived. She was taken to hospital, where she died of her injuries.

The 23-year-old driver remained at the scene. Edmonton police said speed and impairment are not factors in the collision. The investigation is ongoing.
