Liam Gallup was a Grade 12 student at Austin O'Brien Catholic High School in southeast Edmonton. He died in a crash on Sherwood Park Freeway on Sunday, police said.
He was the passenger in a Ford Ranger driven by a friend, also 17. Police say the Ranger was eastbound when it hit an ice patch, lost control, crossed into the westbound lanes and was struck by an oncoming Nissan SUV. Edmonton police say speed and alcohol were not factors. Their Major Collision Investigations Section is leading the investigation. The Ranger's driver, the Nissan's driver and the Nissan's passenger were taken to hospital as a precaution. No other injuries were reported to police.
On Tuesday night, students and staff gathered at Austin O'Brien with flowers and candles, and the vigil opened with bagpipes. Ezra Stockburger, a Grade 12 student and friend of Gallup, said the loss was felt through the school's halls and classrooms. "I've never walked into a school so silent than I did (Monday). Yesterday was the quietest day of all our lives," he said.
A mural with photos of Gallup and his friends now sits outside the main entrance. A memorial table holds his Detroit Lions hat and jersey, two California state flags and messages from friends, family and teachers. Gallup planned to graduate, attend the University of Alberta for a Bachelor of Science, and hoped one day to move to California.
Police have not released the drivers' names or reported any charges. Sgt. Timothy Connell urged drivers to be mindful of how quickly winter road conditions can change.
