Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day falls on Wednesday, June 24 this year, dropping a statutory holiday into the middle of the work week for most Montrealers. If you're planning to celebrate or run errands, here's what to expect.
OPEN: STM buses and metros will run on a holiday schedule—check your transit app before heading out. Montreal's public markets (Atwater, Jean-Talon, Maisonneuve, and neighbourhood markets) should be open, though possibly with reduced hours. Espace pour la Vie museums—the Biodôme, Insectarium, Botanical Garden, Planetarium, and Biosphère—are expected to stay open with regular hours. Most restaurants, bars, and cafés will be open, especially in busy neighbourhoods and tourist areas. Pharmacies and gas stations will mostly stay open, though hours vary by location. Dépanneurs and small grocery stores will be open in central areas but expect reduced hours.
CLOSED: SAQ and SQDC locations will close for the holiday—plan ahead if you need to stock up. Shopping malls (CF Fairview Pointe-Claire, Carrefour Angrignon, the Eaton Centre, Carrefour Laval) and big-box stores (Walmart, Costco) will be shut. Banks and government offices, including the SAAQ and Passport Canada, will close. Canada Post has no mail delivery or pickup. City of Montreal offices—Accès Montréal offices, borough halls, permit counters, and municipal courtrooms—will be closed, with the exception of Room R.40 for detainee appearances. Libraries, pools, and community centres have variable hours by borough—check your local borough's website.
