A 33-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder of a Montreal police officer following a wellness check in the Saint-Michel neighbourhood on August 21.
Montreal police were called around 3:30 p.m. to an apartment on 14th Avenue near Émile-Journault Avenue for a wellness check related to intimate partner violence. During the intervention, the suspect, Lorvens Joseph, allegedly stabbed a police officer who sustained significant stab wounds. His life was not in danger. Joseph was also shot by police after the stabbing.
Joseph has been charged with attempting to take the police officer's weapon and assaulting him. According to the charge sheet, he also failed to comply with a no-contact order.
This is the third domestic-violence incident in Saint-Michel in five days. As HighOnCity reported on August 19, a police officer was seriously injured in a similar intervention in the neighbourhood. On August 16, a woman was killed in a Villeray apartment as police investigated a domestic-violence case.
Québec's police watchdog (BEI) and Sûreté du Québec are conducting separate investigations into Wednesday's incident.
