A 23-year-old Châteauguay man was arrested early Saturday after a high-speed pursuit that reached 217 km/h on Highway 20 West, where the speed limit is 70 km/h.

Sûreté du Québec and Kahnawake Peacekeepers say the driver was operating a vehicle without license plates on Highway 15 North near the Samuel De Champlain Bridge when officers spotted him. Upon seeing police, he fled.

The chase continued on Highway 20 West and Route 138 West toward the Mercier Bridge. Kahnawake Peacekeepers located the vehicle in a parking lot on their territory. During the arrest, the driver allegedly attempted to flee again before colliding with officers' vehicles, rendering his own vehicle inoperable.

His driver's license was suspended for seven days, and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. No injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.

Provincial police used the incident to remind drivers that speed is a leading cause of fatal collisions on Quebec roads.
