Two stabbed at Mooney's Bay; police search for suspects
An adult man in critical condition and a teenage girl hospitalized after Saturday night altercation. Hundreds gathered before violence erupted.
Two people were stabbed at Mooney's Bay Park on Saturday evening, leaving an adult man in critical condition and a teenage girl with non-life-threatening injuries. Ottawa police were called to the park at about 8:53 p.m. on May 30 after reports of an altercation. No arrests have been made.
Paramedics transported the adult male to hospital in critical condition; police officers stabilized him before paramedics arrived. The teenage girl was taken to hospital in stable condition.
A local resident, Elizabeth Elton, was at the park before the stabbing and saw several hundred young people gathered between the beach and playground. "It was just a gathering of kids," she said. As the evening went on, more people arrived. "As we were leaving, we noticed a huge crowd of kids coming over the hill. There were a whole bunch more kids coming." She noted the size of the crowd stood out, but she saw no signs of conflict before leaving—"no sense of any antagonism," she said, "no sense of gangs or anything like that. It was just a bunch of people."
Police maintained a large presence at the park on Sunday while investigators searched for evidence. Videos posted to social media show crowds running from the area as emergency crews responded.
