Erling Haaland scored twice to carry Norway into the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time with a 2–1 victory over five-time champion Brazil on Sunday, July 5, at East Rutherford, New Jersey.

After being largely ineffective through much of the match, Haaland turned decisive when it mattered. He headed in the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute off a perfect setup by Andreas Schjelderup, who entered at halftime. The assist was Schjelderup's second for Haaland, who scored his seventh goal of the tournament — tying Argentina's Lionel Messi and France's Kylian Mbappé for the tournament lead.

Haaland extended his international competitive-match scoring streak to 14 consecutive games, with 27 goals in that stretch and 62 in 54 matches for Norway overall.

Norway's goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, 35 and his team's oldest player, was equally vital. He denied Bruno Guimarães' penalty kick in the 14th minute by diving left, then got his left hand on a shot by Endrick late when Norway clung to a one-goal lead. The only goal Nyland allowed was Neymar's penalty kick in stoppage time.

Guimarães became the first Brazil player to miss a World Cup penalty since Zico in 1986. The decision to have him take the kick instead of star Vinícius Júnior drew immediate criticism.

Brazil, the global powerhouse that entered expecting to contend for the trophy, massively underachieved. The five-time champions' streak of eight consecutive quarterfinal appearances ended, and they lost before that stage for the first time since 1990. The defeat marks Brazil's seventh consecutive loss to European opponents at the World Cup, dating to beating Germany in the 2002 final.

Norway faces the winner of the Mexico–England round-of-16 game on Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida.
