Erling Haaland headed in the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute and scored again before regulation ended, carrying Norway into the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time with a 2–1 victory over Brazil on Sunday.

The 6-foot-5 striker was largely a nonfactor for much of the afternoon, but turned decisive when it mattered most after Andreas Schjelderup entered at halftime. Schjelderup set up both of Haaland's goals — first the header that put Norway ahead, then the second that sealed the upset. With his seventh goal of the tournament, Haaland is now tied with Argentina's Lionel Messi and France's Kylian Mbappé for the most goals in this World Cup.

Haaland has extended his streak of scoring in 14 consecutive competitive international matches, with 27 goals across that span.

Brazil's only goal came from Neymar on a penalty kick late in stoppage time. Goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, 35 and Brazil's oldest player, made crucial stops early — diving left to deny Bruno Guimarães' penalty in the 14th minute — and kept Norway in contention when they were clinging to a one-goal lead.

The loss ends Brazil's streak of eight consecutive quarterfinal appearances at the World Cup. The five-time champions have now lost before the quarterfinal stage for the first time since 1990. It marks their seventh consecutive loss to European opponents at the World Cup, dating to beating Germany in the 2002 final.

Norway, which qualified for the World Cup only four times and last appeared in 1998, will face the winner of Monday's Mexico-England round-of-16 match in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida.
