Erling Haaland scored twice to carry Norway into the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time, stunning five-time champion Brazil with a 2–1 victory Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Haaland headed in the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute, then scored again before the final whistle. After being a nonfactor for much of the afternoon, the 6-foot-5 striker turned it on when it mattered most, with Andreas Schjelderup setting up both goals after entering at halftime. The assists helped Schjelderup celebrate alongside a striker now tied with Argentina's Lionel Messi and France's Kylian Mbappé for the tournament's most goals.
Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland was stellar in the upset. He denied Bruno Guimarães' penalty kick in the 14th minute and made a crucial stop on a late shot by Endrick while Norway clung to a one-goal lead. Neymar scored Brazil's only goal on a penalty in stoppage time.
Brazil's loss ended its streak of eight consecutive quarterfinal appearances and marked its first elimination before that stage since 1990. The global powerhouse also extended its streak of seven consecutive losses to European opponents at the World Cup. Norway, which qualified for the tournament only four times before and had never advanced past the Round of 16, faces the winner of Mexico vs. England on Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida.
