Erling Haaland scored twice, including the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute, as Norway defeated five-time World Cup champion Brazil 2–1 on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey, advancing to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time.
Norway's midfielder Andreas Schjelderup set up both of Haaland's goals after entering at halftime. The 6-foot-5 striker had been largely a nonfactor for much of the match before turning decisive in the final stages, scoring his sixth and seventh goals of the tournament. Haaland extended his streak of scoring to 14 consecutive competitive matches internationally.
Goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland was stellar for Norway, making a crucial save on a penalty kick from Brazil's Bruno Guimarães in the 14th minute. Neymar scored Brazil's only goal late on a penalty kick in stoppage time.
Norway next faces the winner of the Mexico-England round-of-16 match on Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida. Brazil's loss ended its streak of quarterfinal appearances at the tournament at eight consecutive—the first time the global powerhouse has failed to advance past the round of 16 since 1990.
