Erling Haaland headed in the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute and scored again before the end of regulation, carrying Norway into the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time with a 2–1 victory over Brazil on Sunday.
The 6-foot-5 striker, who had been mostly quiet through much of the match, turned decisive when it mattered most. Andreas Schjelderup set up both goals after entering at halftime — first the header in the 80th minute, then assisting Haaland's second goal shortly after. Schjelderup jumped on Haaland's back to celebrate both scores.
Haaland's two goals extended his streak of scoring in 14 consecutive competitive matches internationally. He now has 27 goals in that stretch and 62 in 54 appearances for Norway. His seventh World Cup goal ties him with Argentina's Lionel Messi and France's Kylian Mbappé for the tournament's scoring lead.
Goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland was stellar for Norway. The 35-year-old, his team's oldest player, denied Bruno Guimarães' penalty kick early in the 14th minute with a crucial diving save to his left. Late in the match, with Norway protecting a one-goal lead, he got his left hand on a shot by Endrick. Neymar scored Brazil's only goal on a penalty kick in stoppage time.
The victory ranks among the most significant in Norway's men's football history. The country qualified for the World Cup only four times and had not advanced past the round of 16. Norway's women's team won the World Cup in 1995, but the men have never gone further until now.
Brazil, the five-time World Cup champions, massively underachieved expectations. The loss ended the global powerhouse's streak of eight consecutive quarterfinal appearances, with the team losing before that stage for the first time since 1990. It was Brazil's seventh consecutive loss to European opponents at the World Cup dating to the 2002 final.
Norway next faces the winner of the Mexico-England round-of-16 game on Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida.
