The soft-serve margarita has invaded bars across New York City and has now officially landed in Toronto — and it's already securing a spot as one of the city's current food fixations.
El Catrin in the Distillery District is the first Toronto restaurant to offer the frozen riff on the classic margarita. Made to be attacked with a spoon before the patio humidity turns it back to a liquid better suited for straws, the drink pairs tequila and lime juice into an extra-frozen swirl.
Upon announcing the addition to the menu, El Catrin's followers responded with immediate enthusiasm. "Omg absolutely stunning! I have to try this," one commenter wrote. Another simply said they're "running!!!" to the restaurant. One person preemptively ordered "14 of them."
Priced at $17, the margaritas come in strawberry or mango. The mango version tops the drink with a dusting of Tajin.
The soft-serve margarita phenomenon started making waves on social media after appearing at a series of bars in New York City — the exact origin is hard to trace. It's part of a broader pattern of playful drink innovation: Toronto saw a matcha slushy boom sweep the city in 2025, proving the city's appetite for frozen, Instagram-ready cocktails.
While El Catrin is the first to offer the trend in Toronto, it almost certainly won't be the last. The spot is located at 18 Tank House Ln. in the Distillery District.
