Willy Wacky Sweets, the Canadian importer that built an empire selling rare Japanese KitKats, limited-edition sodas and international snacks online, opened its first permanent storefront Thursday at 175 Harbord Street in Harbord Village.
The brick-and-mortar space took over what was previously Good For Her, the city's oldest sex shop. Stocked with bulk bins full of loose candy and the rare, exotic, and international snacks that earned the retailer 360,000 Instagram followers, the shop is positioned to draw students from Central Tech across the street and collectors of hard-to-find global sweets.
Within days of opening, the shop already caught celebrity attention: K-pop group BTS swung by unannounced to shoot TikToks during their Toronto shows on August 22 and 23. Band member Kim Tae-hyung (V) posted a video from August 24 featuring the mural at Willy's as the centrepiece, capturing another stop on the group's apparent Toronto food tour. The shop has operated on an online and wholesale basis since its founding, making this move a return to the old-school candy shop format — one that seems primed to become one of Harbord's most popular businesses.
