Emergency crews responded early Thursday morning to a fire at a Toronto Community Housing Corporation building on Victoria Park Avenue near Eglinton Avenue East — the second blaze at the same property in less than two weeks.

Toronto Fire arrived at the building near Victoria Park Avenue and O'Connor Drive at 1:52 a.m. to find smoke and flames inside. The fire was quickly knocked down. Two elderly women were transported to hospital — one with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, the other with minor injuries.

This is the second fire at the same TCHC building in recent days. On June 28, a resident was killed in a separate blaze at the property. Toronto Fire says the cause of Thursday's fire has not yet been determined, and an investigation is ongoing.

Toronto Fire investigators remained on scene Thursday morning. TTC shelter buses were brought in to support residents who evacuated the building, and about 18 units on the south side of the ninth floor will not be able to return for about a week as crews assess if any other residents are affected. The building's address is listed online as residential housing with the Toronto Seniors Housing Corporation.
